I must advise caution at this point. I do not recommend the purchase
of Prescription Drugs without first seeking a consultation with
your physician. All drugs can have side effects and may be dangerous
if taken in excessive dosage levels or if they are contraindicated
to a pre-existing medical condition.
Please remember, SEEK THE ADVICE OF YOUR PHYSICIAN before
trying any of the Prescription Drugs and medications listed here.

Drugs and Medications
At present only two medications have been officially approved by
the Food and Drug Administration as hair loss treatments. These
are minoxidil (better known as Rogaine) and finasteride (better
known as Propecia). Several other drugs have proven to be effective
in combating hair loss but have not been approved for this particular
use.
Finasteride (Propecia)
Finasteride was originally developed to treat enlarged
prostate conditions but a low-dose version was subsequently approved
for the treatment of hair loss in men. Research has shown that 83%
of men studied were able to maintain their hair count and 64% experienced
regrowth by the end of a two year period.
Finasteride is supplied in 1mg pills and marketed under
the Propecia brand name and manufactured in the US. Cheaper generic
brands containing the same ingredient are also readily available
on the internet. Some cost-conscious users save money by purchasing
5mg Proscar tablets and splitting them.

Dutasteride
(Avodart)
Avodart is the new medication from GlaxoSmithKline for
reducing DHT and although not yet approved as hair loss treatment,
it has exciting implications regarding this condition. As noted
elsewhere in this site, dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is the main hormone
linked to hair loss. It has been clearly established that Propecia
prevents one of two enzymes from being converted into DHT and blocks
two thirds of the DHT production. The new medication Avodart blocks
both enzymes in the body that convert into DHT and reputedly reduces
overall DHT production by over 93%.
Avodart comes in a 0.5mg softgel capsule that is taken
by mouth once per day. Propecia was originally approved under the
name Proscar for BPH and was only released for hair loss years later.
Avodart has been approved for the treatment of Benign Prostatic
Hyperplasia (BPH, or enlarged prostates) and is currently under
study for approval for hair loss.
Early feedback has shown that Avodart at this dosage
reduced DHT by 93.1 - 93.6% after 12-months on the medication. Scalp
DHT was decreased 38% for Propecia/Finasteride compared to 54% for
0.5mg Dutasteride.
Since Avodart is currently being studied for hair loss
treatment, there are no exact figures on the percent of responders
or results other than some of the sample photos released by the
company from the studies. Results are expected to surpass Propecia's
but this cannot be backed up by fact at present.
Avodart is not tested or approved for women and should
not under any circumstances be taken by women who may become pregnant.

Minoxidil
(Rogaine)
Minoxidil is one of only two FDA approved hair loss
treatments and it is the only anti-baldness drug approved for women.
Its main benefit is its ability to stimulate regrowth, thus reversing
the effects of androgenetic alopecia (pattern baldness).
Many users combine the application of minoxidil with
other hair loss treatments like Propecia to achieve optimal results,
but others experience satisfactory outcomes using minoxidil on its
own.
The Minoxidil
Factfinder provides extensive information on the background
to this medication, outlines the best hair loss treatment options
available and tells you where to find money-saving deals for both
brand name and generic products.
Back to list of treatments
Tretinoin
(Retin-A)
Tretinoin is well known for the treatment of acne but
medical studies have shown it also helps stimulate hair regrowth.
Scientists further believe that tretinoin enhances the absorption
and penetration of minoxidil into the hair follicles. As a result,
several formulations of tretinoin and minoxidil are available on
the market, generally by prescription only.
Back to list of treatments
Nizoral
Nizoral shampoo contains 2% Ketoconazole and is often
prescribed for the treatment of fungal infections of the scalp and
sebbhoreic dermatitis. However, as it has anti-androgenic properties,
it is used by some individuals in combination with other treatments
in the treatment of androgenetic alopecia.
The 2% version is generally available only by way of
prescription but as it is classed as a non-prescription medication
in Canada, it can be ordered directly from outlets there at reasonable
cost. Please go to the Nizoral
Factfinder for more information.

Non-Drug Treatments
Several studies have shown that certain non-drug products promote
hair regrowth but none have been approved by the FDA. This is largely
due to the prohibitive costs involved in conducting trials to prove
that the products are effective for the purpose of marketing them
as hair loss treatments.
Many individuals and dermatologists nonetheless recommend
use of certain non-drug treatments as an alternative or complement
to drug therapy. The information provided here includes only those
products that have been subjected to testing or at least have had
their effectiveness supported by independent feedback.
